The big news regarding links to black soldiers is the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, which is now operational. The first phase of this ambitious project involved putting the names of every soldier who served in the United States Colored Troops (black enlisted man or white officer) on line. Since its inception, the names of hundreds of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers have been added to the database. You will be amazed at the wealth of information regarding Civil War soldiers in general and African- American soldiers in particular that is now available at your fingertips. This is a "must see" site!
In 1999 James Robert Bond's great-granddaughter Adele Logan Alexander published the family's remarkable history Homelands and Waterways: The American Journey of the Bond Family, 1846 - 1926. The book recalls Bond's story, just one of the thousands of stories played out on the many vessels and battlefields of the Civil War.
Over the course of the conflict 18,000 men (and more than a dozen women) of African descent served in the U.S. Navy, some 15 percent of the total enlisted force. They served on almost every one of the nearly 700 navy vessels including those of the Mississippi Squadron. Eight of these sailors earned the Medal of Honor for their heroism in battle.
he Archives Library Information Center (ALIC) is more than a traditional library. Recognizing that our customers no longer expect to work within the walls of a library, these pages are designed to provide NARA staff and researchers nationwide with convenient access to content beyond the physical holdings of our two traditional libraries. ALIC provides access to information on American history and government, archival administration, information management, and government documents to NARA staff, archives and records management professionals, and the general public.
he Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a computerized database containing very basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The initial focus of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter names and other basic information from 6.3 million soldier records in the National Archives.
